Information Number

Following the running of Race 5, an Information was lodged by Mr N Goodwin alleging a breach of Rule 638(1) (d) in that Mr Riddell allowed his mount HOLY SMOKE to shift out with 250 metres to run and checked DRESSTO EMPRESSNOW.

Mr Whiterod explained the incident assisted by the three available films. Soon after entering the home straight Mr Riddell, who was racing midfield, angled his mount out looking for a run. As he made his move he was not quite the required distance clear of Ms Myers who was racing on his outside. Ms Myers was checked and had to momentarily steady her mount DRESSTO EMPRESSNOW.

Mr Riddell explained that he was searching for a run and trying to get out and win the race. At the time he didn’t really realise Ms Myers was there but having viewed the films he did admit to “cutting it a bit short”. He pointed out that Ms Myers' horse was tiring at the time of the incident.

As Mr Riddell admitted the breach we found the charge proved.

Submission For Penalty:

Mr Goodwin said Mr Riddell had incurred two suspensions for careless riding this year.  He was suspended for 5 days in September and four days in June. Mr Goodwin said while the carelessness was towards the lower end the Stewards’ submission was for a term of suspension of four riding days.

Mr Riddell did not make any submissions on penalty but did advise the committee that he had riding commitments right through until Trentham next Saturday. He also said he rode regularly in the South Island having ridden at Ashburton yesterday and intended riding at Timaru and Riccarton at the end of the month.

Reasons For Penalty:

The committee took into account all of the submissions and adopted as a starting point, a period of five days suspension. In our opinion the degree of carelessness displayed by Mr Riddell was at the lower end. While he did move out reasonably sharply the field was not racing in tight quarters and DRESSTO EMPRESSNOW was only mildly checked. We did not believe the interference affected that horse’s chances. We gave credit for Mr Riddell’s admission of the breach and his record. He is a busy rider competing at the highest level; we considered his riding record to be very good. Balancing up all of these factors we imposed a three day suspension.

Mr Riddell is suspended from the close of racing on Saturday October 27th up to and including racing on Wednesday October 31st.
