Careless Riding

Following the running of Race 2, the MAINFREIGHT 1400, Mr Coles presented an Information charging Callum Jones, Apprentice Jockey, the Rider of MORNING GLORY, with careless riding in breach of Rule 638(1)(d).  He contended that Mr Jones permitted his mount to shift in near the 1000 metres point when not sufficiently clear of SLAVE TO LOVE which as a consequence had to be checked.

As Mr Jones admitted the charge it was found proved.

Submission For Penalty:

Mr Coles advised that Mr Jones, a young Apprentice Jockey, had a good record from the 12 months he has been riding.  He has had only one breach of the careless riding rule. He submitted that the breach was "mid-range".

Mr Harris, on behalf of Mr Jones, emphasised that Mr Jones, while a young and naturally inexperienced Rider, had begun his riding career very successfully.  He said he was learning to adjust his riding to the firmer tracks now prevailing, was a fast learner, and provided he heeded the tuition of Mr Harris, had a bright future as a Jockey.

Reasons For Penalty:

A starting point to reflect the nature of the careless riding is fixed at 7 National Riding Days suspension.  To give proper weight to the youth, inexperience, and good record of a young apprentice, a fair discount of 3 days for these mitigating factors is justified.

Accordingly, Mr Jones' Licence is suspended from 5 November 2020 to 10 November 2020 inclusive - that is, 4 National Riding Days.
