Excessive use of the whip

Following the running of Race 2, the Harcourts Otaki Highweight, Stipendiary Steward, Mr N Goodwin presented an Information charging Ms Emily Farr, a Licensed Rider, with excessive use of the whip, a breach of Rule 638(3)(b(ii).

The race film demonstrated Ms Farr struck her mount PIPING HOT with the whip 11 times prior to the 100 metre mark.

Ms Farr signed the Information admitting the charge.


As the charge was admitted is was found proved.

Submission For Penalty:

Mr Goodwin referred to the Revised Whip Guidelines recommendation of a starting point of a 6 national riding day suspension if the number of strikes is 10 or more.

Ms Farr had no comment to make regarding a possible suspension.

Reasons For Penalty:

Ms Farr is an experienced Jumps and Highweight rider with mounts at Ellerslie on Saturday, 17 October 2020.


Ms Farr’s licence is suspended from the cessation racing on Saturday, 17 October 2020 until the cessation of racing on Sunday, 1 November 2020, being 7 national riding days. In effect it would mean only 1 remaining Jumping raceday at Whanganui on 1 November 2020.
